Platypedia putnami survey at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space by Tim McNary

Here’s a short 2021 update for the Platypedia putnami survey at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, west of Fort Collins, Colorado. 2021 is turning out to be a very large emergence for this cicada, and it’s not through yet! The survey transect goes from the trailhead parking lot to Horsetooth Falls. Although the first exuvia found was on May 22, 2021, the bulk of the exuvia, so far, have emerged (153 of 201 exuvia) June 5-8th. “Clicking” of adults can be heard in many areas, but is concentrated in certain sites.

AA. Fore wings much broader, the breadth being equal to about one-half the distance from the basal cell to the apex of the wing.

Uncus when viewed from above broadly lanceolate and subacute at apex, its width almost half the length. Last ventral segment in female with notch more narrowly V-shaped than in aperta. Membranes at base of fore wings orange. Expands about 36 millimeters. Occurs in California and Nevada vanduzeei new species.

A. Fore wings more than twice as long as broad.

B. Large, expanding 40 millimeters or over; uncus when viewed from above long and narrow.

C. Head narrow across eyes with front strongly produced.

DD. Uncus viewed in profile slightly arched above, sinuate beneath, extremity not flattened as in mohavensis.

Body blue-black, particularly the head and thorax; fore femora chestnut-colored above, paler at extremities; membranes at the base of fore wings bright orange. Expends about 40 millimeters. Occurs in California.

Platypedia putnami occidentalis Davis, 1920

Name, Location and Description

A. Fore wings more than twice as long as broad.

B. Large, expanding 40 millimeters or over; uncus when viewed from above long and narrow.

CC. Head broader across the eyes with front not as strongly produced. Uncus viewed in profile arched at the top, the arch extending to the extremity, which is thickened; uncus also deepened near the base in typical putnami and areolata.

E. Body black with bluish reflections especially on the pronotum and mesonotum. Fore femora in mature individuals entirely black, pale at extremities, except in variety occidentalis of putnami which has chestnut-colored fore femora.

Body blue-black and marked as in typical putnami except for the legs which are pale, the fore femora not blackened above, and the other legs also almost wholly chestnut colored. Occurs in western California. putnami var. occidentalis new variety.

A. Fore wings more than twice as long as broad.

B. Large, expanding 40 millimeters or over; uncus when viewed from above long and narrow.

CC. Head broader across the eyes with front not as strongly produced. Uncus viewed in profile arched at the top, the arch extending to the extremity, which is thickened; uncus also deepened near the base in typical putnami and areolata.

E. Body black with bluish reflections especially on the pronotum and mesonotum. Fore femora in mature individuals entirely black, pale at extremities, except in variety occidentalis of putnami which has chestnut-colored fore femora.

Body blue-black but duller than in putnami. Costal margin of fore wings to end of the radial cell, and membranes at the base of fore wings orange. Expands about 53 millimeters. Occurs in Utah, Montana, Arizona, Wyoming. putnami var. lutea new variety.
