This is one of my favorite neotibicen species. I’ve always wondered why this cicada looks so different from the other cicadas in it’s genus, and why it never made it into “The Green Group.”

    1. Dan says:

I don’t think it hybridizes with the “green group” which could be why… even though it’s the most green of all. 🙂 Looking at “Molecular phylogenetics, diversification, and systematics of Tibicen Latreille 1825 and allied cicadas of the tribe Cryptotympanini, with three new genera and emphasis on species from the USA and Canada
      (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae)”
looks like it’s closest related to auriferus and davisi.

      1. Coleman says:

I once had a male neotibicen superbus and a female neotibicen pruinosus, and the neotibicen superbus kept on trying to mate with the neotibicen pruinosus, and he would’ve been able to do so if the neotibicen pruinosus didn’t keep flicking him off of her with her wings.

While I was visiting Texas last week, I was relaxing on the porch when this thing landed on my shoulder. His noise deafening!! He kept landing on me and followed me everywhere. Was very interesting.
