I have a cicada hanging out on my screen door, eaten the sliding glass door and the screen. It’s hard to tell its color because the light is behind it, it appears to be grey with grey eyes and tan legs. What I’m wondering about is the black bump on one side of its back. It has some black spots, also. None of the photos here seem to have that black bump on only one side.

I remember being a kid in Arkansas in the 70s and 80s and the cicadas would chirp ,buzzing or click when it was close to night night fall now it's the 2025 I'm in Virginia and I hear the cicadas all day long early in the morning noon day and night . They look odd but to think a group of insects being loud
Just saw my first cicada in Somersworth NH. My sister is visiting from SC, so she’s very familiar with them. She said she heard one yesterday, I told her she was crazy. Guess she’s not…
Here's what I believe your wrote (in English): "I sectioned the branch, on the portion where it inserted the eggs, and at each insertion I found egg packets, about 20 eggs at each sting." Sounds correct to me!
Hi! Thank you for this information! One was on my deck at about 1:00pm this afternoon (Hilton Head, S.C.) I have a photo but it doesn’t appear that I can attach it here.

I found a deceased little one on our sidewalk in SE MI. He was beautiful. I gave him a burial. I have not heard any noises outside yet. Will listen today! RIP little one
My office window is facing the woods and sits just below an outdoor light, so I sometimes see different summer insects land on my window screen. I was amazed and thrilled to find this behemoth of a cicada there tonight! They're my favorite insect and being in coastal Virginia, there's plenty, but I had never seen one this big. Nearly 3/4" wide and from eyes to wingtips was 2 5/8" long. It has chilled there all night and been my late-night buddy.
One of these flew right at me tonight in North Alabama! My dog had some fun playing with it when it was on the ground lol. Thanks for the resource to be able to identify what attacked me!
I believe I have Robinson’s Cicada on my property (mixed hardwood/cedar plus some pines). Is there any other species with a similar song? Karen Spencer, IN
I'm fairly certain this is the cicada I'm hearing right now In East Tennessee. The pitch and timing of the call is spot on. I've not found one for visual ID, but I'm enjoying laying here in the hammock listening to them anyway.
One just strawed my hand meat after I picked it up from off its back outside it's soooo mean I was only out there to save a baby raccoon who got stuck in my trash can
We have recordings of delicata, which seems to have a frequency range more like 8–12 kHz, much lower than that of calliope. The insectsingers recordings included one that I deliberately reduced in pitch so that adult humans could hear the pattern more easily. It is likely that the lower pitched one above is that track.

hi! i think the greek word for cicada is wrong. tzitzaki is not a word in greek (it's similar to tzatziki, though, which is a kind of sauce). the singular for cicada is tzitziki (emphasis on the second i), and the plural is tzitzikia (same here). love your site by the way!
