I live in Alpharetta, Georgia, and am hearing a few cicadas today (6/17/26). Based on the information above, I am guessing these might be stragglers from 2024. Will keep listening.
Where is it not listed? On Common Cicadas of North America? It's because I do not have a photo of one. Take a photo, send it to me and I will add it. 🙂
Surprisingly, I just saw one Highland, NY! I couldn't believe it when I saw it fly. I checked, and there are broods in nearby towns. This is my first year in the area.
Hatch ~ April 20, Buckingham county 23936 (north of Dillwyn, near Ranson Rd). I could hear them crawling up from the ground at night. Hundreds hanging out on my car, especially the tires. I've three old maple trees and an 1880s farmhouse. My neighbors with newer houses didn't have as many. I'm not hearing any singers.
Thanks for letting us know. The lore is that there's a Brood XV specifically located in Fanwood. It would be related to Brood II (the one that emerged in 2013), but it is supposed to be its own thing. If you hear them chorusing, let us know.
I live very near Fanwood NJ and I was surprised to see periodical cicadas emerging today morning. Found this page searching for news on the topic. Fascinating. I don't recall seeing them in 2009. (2013 was a big year here.)
Just uncovered over 40 while replacing old landscaping paper. Lake Monticello Virginia. All mobile and most are full grown. Just piling what if find on the driveway and hoping the woodpeckers, jays or squirrels notice them.
I don't like these Insects(Cicada Stragglers whatever you call them. They emerge in our yard Around 16th I think. There are so many and I wish they would just all die off and go away.
I found six straggler shells under my ornamental cherry tree this morning (4/24) in Bremo Bluff, Virginia 23023! Also noted lots of holes in the ground. Haven't seen or heard any actual cicadas yet. I will go out at dusk tonight and try to collect some and watch them hatch inside on my curtains! What fun! Longtime cicada lover.
I'm in Macon Ga but on April first I thought I heard a tredecim but I didn't see any shells and my house usually have stragglers I've have seen stragglers in the past years and even a acceleration in 2020 I usually find shells under my carport but haven't seen any in 2023 I've found a Cassini straggler in my neighbors yard and he was right at the fence going into my neighbors yard so I still was able to grab him because he was still at the edge of the fence I hope I can find some this year...
I have not seen any stragglers yet I'm in brood xix territory and it's mid April 14 and the ground has already hit 64 degrees 8in in mid to late march.
I plan on focusing on Cheesequake State Park this year. It is the site I had first seen magicicada in my life when I was 12 yrs old in 2013! It was normal brood density in 2013, and I hope many stragglers come up this May! Park is only 20 minutes from me lol. I live in Monmouth, and I know brood II is almost non existent here sadly haha.
It's March 11 2026 and we had two weeks of temperatures in the low 80s And upper 70s in Macon Georgia where brood xix emerge could we have stragglers emerging in March this year.
I found one straggler and heard many singers back in 2009 (Brood II stragglers), so I am enthusiastic about them. I am interested to learn about the Fanwood situation.
Ugh I’m so excited Dan! I wonder how many will surface with that Shadow brood XV in Fanwood, NJ. I remember Elias said there was enough to chorus lightly for a few days!
I think Cicadas are called "zang cicaden" in Dutch (meaning "singing cicadas"). Krekel refers to the family Gryllidae of the order Orthoptera. Cheers (Groetjes).
Cicada in Surinamese language (Sranan Tongo) is called Siksi-Juru (seeksee-Uru): meaning 6 O'clock in the evening, referring to the time which they are mostly heard here. Even when people haven't seen or don't know the Cicada, they recognize the sound as being Siksi-Juru sound.
That is great to hear. Suriname should have many of the same cicadas that neighboring countries like Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil have. Perhaps some of these species.
