Cicada Images Magicicada Nymphs found by Elias elias-magicicada-1stand2nd-nymph-06

Here are probable first and second instar nymph of Magicicada septendecim (Periodical cicada) from the 2008 Brood XIV emergence. Dug up from beneath an oak tree. They were living approximately 4-6 inches from the ground surface. Temperature 70 degrees, Date: March 21, 2010.

Note the prominence of the eye spots and smaller size of the nymph on the right leading me to believe this is a first instar. They are of the same age however.
