I&#8217;m republishing without the embeds. <\/p>\n<p>This article was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/simonleather.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/24\/serious-fun-with-google-trends\/\">Serious Fun with Google Trends<\/a> by Simon Leather.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/trends\/\">Google Trends<\/a> is a Google website that lets you see trends in the search terms over time. When people search for &#8220;cicada&#8221; it usually means cicadas have emerged in their area at the time they search.<\/p>\n<p>The following graph shows when people searched for <strong>&#8220;cicada&#8221;<\/strong> over the past 10 years in the United States. <strong>The largest spike, in May of 2004<\/strong>, coincided with the emergence of <strong>Brood X<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/explore?date=all&#038;geo=US&#038;q=cicadas\">See it on Google Trends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/2004-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Google Trends 2004-2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"194\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/2004-2015.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/2004-2015-300x91.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might think that periodical cicada emergences cause the largest spikes, but not always \u2014 and not just because periodical cicadas don&#8217;t emerge every year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> Cicada searches spiked <strong>May 16-22<\/strong>, which was <strong>Brood X &mdash; Magicicadas<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>2005:<\/strong> <strong>Jul 31-Aug 6<\/strong> spike which was for <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas. No periodical cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2006:<\/strong> <strong>Aug 13-19<\/strong>, <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas. No periodical cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2007:<\/strong> <strong>May 20-26<\/strong>, Brood XIII &mdash; Magicicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2008:<\/strong> <strong>Brood XIV Magicicadas emerged<\/strong> (spike Jun 8-14), but the largest spike was <strong>Jul 29-Aug 2<\/strong>, <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2009:<\/strong> <strong>Aug 16-22<\/strong>, <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2010:<\/strong> <strong>Aug 8-14<\/strong>, <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2011:<\/strong> <strong>May 29-Jun 4<\/strong>, <strong>Brood XIX &mdash; Magicicadas<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>2012:<\/strong> <strong>Jul 29-Aug 4<\/strong>, <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas.<br \/>\n<strong>2013:<\/strong> <strong>May 5-11<\/strong>, <strong>Brood II &mdash; Magicicadas<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>2014:<\/strong> <strong>Brood XXII &mdash; Magicicadas<\/strong> had a relatively small spike <strong>May 25-31<\/strong>, compared with <strong>Aug 24-30<\/strong> for <strong>Neotibicen Cicadas<\/strong> (late season due to cool weather). There was also a teeny bit of a spike around January of 2014 due to the &#8220;cicada 3301&#8221; meme\/game.<br \/>\n<strong>2015:<\/strong> Brood XXIII &#038; IV Magicicadas emerged (spike around Jun 7-13), but the largest spike was around Aug 9-15 for <strong>Neotibicen<\/strong> Cicadas.<\/p>\n<p>Which cities had the most cicada searches over the past 14 years? Nashville, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Arlington, Washington, Alexandria, Pittsburg, St. Louis, Columbus, and Chicago. Time to move to Nashville. <\/p>\n<h3>Australia<\/h3>\n<p>In Australia, searches for &#8220;cicadas&#8221; peaks in December (summertime in Australia). It looks like there is a year-over-year pattern arising as well, with peaks every 4 years (2009, 2013, 2017) particularly, if you <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/explore?date=all&#038;geo=AU-NSW&#038;q=cicadas\">drill down to New South Wales<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/explore?date=all&#038;geo=AU&#038;q=cicadas\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/australia-2002-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Australia Google Trends\" width=\"640\" height=\"160\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/australia-2002-2017.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/australia-2002-2017-300x75.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Other countries<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Argentina peaks in March for cigarra.<\/li>\n<li>Brazil peaks in October and April for cigarra.<\/li>\n<li>France peaks in July for cigales.<\/li>\n<li>Mexico peaks in May or June for chicharra, but October for cigarra.<\/li>\n<li>New Zealand peaks in February for cicadas.<\/li>\n<li>South Korea peaks in July for \u00eb\u00a7\u00a4\u00eb\u00af\u00b8.<\/li>\n<li>Spain peaks in July for cigarra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now I know when to visit these countries. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Try it yourself. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: I originally took this article down because embedding Google Trends slowed down the loading of the page.
