{"id":5258,"date":"2015-02-05T19:39:09","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T02:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/?p=5258"},"modified":"2015-02-06T20:28:56","modified_gmt":"2015-02-07T03:28:56","slug":"visualizing-all-periodical-cicada-broods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/visualizing-all-periodical-cicada-broods\/","title":{"rendered":"Visualizing all periodical cicada broods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Isn&#8217;t this a lovely picture (updated with colors sorted)?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/colorsSorted.jpg\" alt=\"All Broods\" width=\"640\" height=\"475\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/colorsSorted.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/colorsSorted-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This image represents the combined range of all <a href=\"\/cicadas\/where-will-17-13-year-periodical-cicadas-emerge-next\/\">Magicicada periodical cicada<\/a> broods, including the extinct Broods XI (last recorded in Connecticut) and XXI (last recorded in Florida). <\/p>\n<p>To produce this image, I visited John Cooley&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cicadas.uconn.edu\/geospatial\/\">Cicadas @ UCONN Cicada Geospacial Data Clearinghouse<\/a> and downloaded the Shapefile of Magicicada broods. Then I used the computer program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qgis.org\/en\/site\/\">QGIS<\/a> to change the Shapefile to a KML file, and then I opened the file in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/earth\/\">Google Earth<\/a>. Credit goes to John for pulling the data together into the Shapefile.<\/p>\n<p>I manually edited the KML file to try to give each Brood a different color.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting area is Fredrick County, where 5 different broods seem to exist (or have existed) at once.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FrederickCounty.jpg\" alt=\"Fredrick County VA\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FrederickCounty.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FrederickCounty-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Peach = Brood I<br \/>\nGreen = Brood II<br \/>\nPurple = Brood V<br \/>\nCyan = Brood X<br \/>\nRed = Brood XIV<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also interesting that four of the broods are separated by four years: X, XIV, I, V. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Isn&#8217;t this a lovely picture (updated with colors sorted)?
