{"id":4845,"date":"2014-06-05T08:32:14","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T15:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/?p=4845"},"modified":"2020-03-27T17:26:45","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T00:26:45","slug":"lookout-for-stragglers-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/lookout-for-stragglers-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Lookout for Stragglers in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you follow Cicada Mania, you&#8217;ve probably heard about the regularly scheduled emergences in <a href=\"\/cicadas\/brood-xxii-the-baton-rouge-brood-will-arrive-in-2014\/\">Louisiana and Mississippi<\/a> (Brood XXII); in <a href=\"\/cicadas\/brood-iii-the-iowan-brood-will-emerge-in-2014\/\">Iowa, Missouri and Illinois<\/a> (Brood III); and the (micro) brood in <a href=\"\/cicadas\/13-year-cicadas-to-emerge-in-ohio-kentucky-in-2014\/\">Ohio and Kentucky<\/a>, BUT, there could be other Magicicada emerging around the USA. <\/p>\n<p>Magicicada cicadas often straggle from the times they are expected to emerge. This can happen due to overcrowding (too many cicadas underground can delay the development and emergence of some). It could also be a natural thing they do &#8212; maybe some accelerate from a 17 year to 13 year life cycle, or back, to form new populations or as a strategy for survival. Most of the time they straggle in 1 year or 4 year intervals.
