Here&#8217;s a Magicicada photo Ryan Anderson took during the 2002 brood XXIII emergence in Kentucky. <\/p>\n<p><img src='\/cicadas\/wp-content\/ryan2002.jpg' alt='Magicicada' width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now is a good a time as any to point out the difference between Magicicadas and Tibicens:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magicicadas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emerge in en masse in groups called broods<\/li>\n<li>There are <a href=\"\/cicadas\/where-will-17-13-year-periodical-cicadas-emerge-next\/#chart\">15 different broods<\/a>. Broods emerge every 13 or 17 years depending on the brood. No broods emerged in 2006.<\/li>\n<li>Magicicadas have red eyes, black bodies and orange legs and wings<\/li>\n<li>Other names for Magicicadas: periodical cicadas, &#8220;locusts&#8221;, 17-year cicadas, 13-year cicadas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tibicens:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emerge in limited numbers, and not in broods<\/li>\n<li>Emerge every year<\/li>\n<li>Tibicens are typically larger than Magicicadas. Tibicens are usually a combination of green, black, or brown.<\/li>\n<li>Other names for Tibicens: Harvest Flies, annual cicadas, Dog-Day cicadas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bet you thought I was going to post another Tibicen photo!
