We have many Robinson's and Scissors Grinders (possibly more than one species) in our trees (also mixed hardwood and cedar with a few pines) in rural NC outside of Liberty. There are some others, but these are preponderant. Robinson's remind me of small guiros (raspy Latin percussion instruments) being scraped regularly and deliberately. To my ear, they don't resemble any other cicada listed on cicadamania.com.<\/p><\/div>

From my personal experience, one of my trees has all the cicadas this year, and the other 8 did not. It could be that some critters got to the cicadas under your tree, so none emerged this year. Also, if you sprayed for other insects, that can wipe them out.<\/p><\/div>

Does anybody know why every year I have cicadas in my tree, and this year they're in all the surrounding trees, but they're not in my big locust maple tree?? Does anybody know the answer to that question? I had and identical tree about twenty feet from it.And it got attacked by ants and died, and i'm thinking, the reason is because this tree is dying and they're not in it. Can somebody please tell me i'm wrong???<\/p><\/div>

We have a globe willow that they must love. We go out every night to see them coming out of their shells. We have seen as many as ten in a single night. We are in northwest Oklahoma.<\/p><\/div>

Ah, this is the one I was looking for! It sings right in the middle of the day, and the ones here in FL sound like a paper saw blade. This animal's sound always stands out, even among choruses of other drones. It's like a Savart's wheel in animal form. Great website! It's nice to put names and faces to all the sounds I've heard for years.<\/p><\/div>

It's one of my favorite animals. My Florida woods are full of them. Your video was useful in learning to distinguish their calls. I'm still hunting for the one whose call I like most - sounds like a paper saw blade or something - but the Hieroglyphic is undoubtedly the most stylish looking! I find the Hieroglyphics, and their exuviae, usually about 1-3 feet off the ground. They don't seem to be attracted to regular house lights or to the yellow "bug lights". In my experience, newly-emerged ones will sit perfectly still even if you pick up the object they're...<\/p><\/div>

I live in Glendive, Mt. and this year 2026 we have cicadas singing away in the cottonwoods in Eyre Park. Last week I was leaving Reynolds Market, next door to Eyre Park after 10 p.m. and there was a cicada about four feet above the outside door, making the loud cicada sound.<\/p><\/div>

Why do you say that? The cicada in the photo was identified by Kathy Hill, author of the paper https:\/\/mapress.com\/zt\/article\/view\/zootaxa.3985.2.3. Her and her husband David Marshall are the experts on Neotibicen. I know a lot of people look for the band of white pruinose on the cicada's back, but that is not conclusive.<\/p><\/div>

I spot some of these cicadas in the beach by the bay side in Destin-Fort Walton Beach, FL, they are by the small bushes and the small plants in the sand. I catch them that they are both male and female. The females are mostly in the plants by the sand and I catch them in the net. the males are mostly by the bushes and I caught one with my hands and maybe the net too. And they are sometimes hard to catch and hard to walk by them. I put these cicada in the cage and take them...<\/p><\/div>

Hi! It sounds like July is late in the year for periodical cicadas, but I\u2019m in CT and I just spotted a cicada and it was red\/orange and black, not green. Is it possible to be a periodical cicada? I snapped a pic but it\u2019s of the underside through a mesh screen at night, so not the best.<\/p><\/div>

Hatch ~ April 20, Buckingham county 23936 (north of Dillwyn, near Ranson Rd). I could hear them crawling up from the ground at night. Hundreds hanging out on my car, especially the tires. I've three old maple trees and an 1880s farmhouse. My neighbors with newer houses didn't have as many. I'm not hearing any singers.<\/p><\/div>
