Pretty Brazilian Cicada: the Carineta diardi

Pia Öberg from Sweden took this cicada photo back in 2004 at Hotel do Ypê in Itatiaia NP in Brazil. Thanks to Roy Troutman and cicada expert Allen Sanborn we were able to ID this pretty cicada as a Carineta diardi (Guérin-Méneville, 1829). In addition to Brazil, C. diardi is also found in Argentina.

How long to these guys live? 2-7 years and then 1-2 weeks as adults? Are they annual or periodical?

    1. Dan says:

They’re not periodical. Like many cicadas that appear annually, they might have some proto-periodical tendencies based on weather or overcrowding underground. but I do not know about this specific cicada.

I don’t know how long they spend underground, but 2-7 sounds plausible. Depending on conditions above ground they probably can last longer than 2 weeks, but probably not much longer than 4.
