I updated the Excel file for keeping track of a Magicicada periodical emergence, which you can download.
This is what it looks like:
It covers the major phases of an emergence:
Animals (including pets) digging for them
Holes & Chimneys appear in your lawn
Nymphs Emerge & Molt
Singing
Chorusing & Wing Flicking
Mating
Egg Laying
Die-off
Flagging of tree foliage
Eggs Hatch
I just had a friend post a video on their facebook page today 5/3/2024 showing hundreds of shells around one of their trees. They didn’t see any adults. Nonetheless, I’m driving up to their place in Mechanicsburg, PA tomorrow because I’m guessing they may have an early emergence of Brood XIV coming out one year early.
Hello!
We’ve got cicada holes that showed up in our yard sometime over the weekend and we noticed them Sunday afternoon, but the cicadas have not yet emerged.
Then Sunday night it stormed quite badly and a portion of our yard was flooded on Monday—there were a lot of the holes in that area.
I’m just curious if cicadas are able to survive heavy storms after they’ve already dug their holes, but before they’ve emerged? I’m hoping they’ll be okay, but I am in Missouri, so there definitely won’t be any shortage of them this year!
They can survive stuff like that. Their tunnels have “cells” they can retreat to to stay away from the water.
Thank you the reply and the info! I really appreciate it! 🙂
