Collected deceased specimens of apparent M. tredecassini tonight in Friendsville, TN (Blount County). Very large emergence happened at a friend’s house, but we were only able to make it out today. Low numbers still singing and few still alive. All black abdomens, very small size, no color patch behind eye near wing insertion.
Black abdomens = Magicicada tredecassini Alexander and Moore, 1962. Thanks for sharing.
Should M. tredcassini be here in Montgomery County 2024 brood XIX? So far I have not found any dead ones…mostly M. tredecim and not sure but maybe M. tredecula? Keep looking for an all-black abdomen but no luck so far and they are nearly gone. I can still hear the M. tredecim softly singing in the trees, but probably not for much longer. I will miss them!
You should have tredecassini. They might have all emerged at this point and be up in the trees at this point. They go for the highest trees, while tredecim linger closer to the group.
Thanks Dan!
