Actually pertaining to my earlier response I guess some cicadas are annual — I learned something today. I would bet what I found was an annual cicada ratger than a 17 year one.
Around 1990 I found a bug underneath the grass (off Amity outside Boise at my grandpa’s house) and took it to a Biology professor at BSU to find out what kind of bug it was. He looked it up and informed me it was a cicada. I was surprised he did not know it by just looking at it but then I guess if they are do not come out every year then that might explain it? I am not sure if a person could look up historical records to find which year I probably found the cicada in if they only come out every 17 years? Going back 34 years takes us back to 1987. I got my driver’s license at 14 years old (perhaps in 1987) and my parents did not take me to BSU at that time. I am not sure I buy that 1987 was the year I found the cicada. If it was a year or 2 later I would buy it more but… ?
I saw one of these Cicadas in our backyard on 5-19-21. I thought it was a very interesting looking insect. I didnt realize what it was until this morning when a picture was shown on an internet show. I am in Boise Idaho.
