In Japan cicadas are called Semi, a.k.a. 蝉.

    For the symbol or cicada. Cicada I know is spoken as Semi. The symbol might be wrong — I got it from Google translations.

    Oh..I just searched dictionary again.. The japanese translation should be “Higurashi”.

    This is in fact a chinese charactor, called “Chan”.

    I believe Semi means little bear — if your think about it, the nymphs do look like bears.

    Thanks for the translation of “Semi” M. Kato uses the word as part of a title for his Japanese literature on cicadas, but I didn’t know the word actually meant cicada in Japanese.
