Hello Cicada

Filed under: Pop Culture — Dan @ 9:43 am

In Japan cicadas are called Semi, a.k.a. 蝉.

That’s your cicada fact of the day.

  1. Dan says:

For the symbol or cicada. Cicada I know is spoken as Semi. The symbol might be wrong — I got it from Google translations.

  2. Simon Liu says:

Oh..I just searched dictionary again.. The japanese translation should be “Higurashi”.

  3. Simon Liu says:

This is in fact a chinese charactor, called “Chan”.

  4. Dan says:

I believe Semi means little bear — if your think about it, the nymphs do look like bears.

  5. Tim McNary says:

Thanks for the translation of “Semi” M. Kato uses the word as part of a title for his Japanese literature on cicadas, but I didn’t know the word actually meant cicada in Japanese.
