Ricky B sent us this sound file of a cicada that he recorded in August of 2010 in Chicago:

Can you guess which species it is?

I agree Dave – went by geography and chose T. pruinosa. I have heatd T winnemanna in North Carolina and it is difficult to tell them apart.

  2. Dave says:

However, as far as we know T. winnemanna sounds the same, so without knowledge of either morphology (usually) or geography, you can’t be sure which one it is. Chicago is supposed to be pruinosus.

  3. Elias says:

Sounds like a loud chorus of Tibicen pruinosa.
