fOR THE LAST FEW YEARS AN ARMY OF ? HAS BEEN USING MY AND MY NEIGHBOURS GARDEN AS AN OPERA HOUSE..I CAN'T FIND THEM BECASUE THEY GO QUIET WHEN I APPROACH BUT FROM EARLY EVENING UNTIL AFTER DARK IN WARMER MONTHS THEY START UP WITH THE MOST INCREDIBLE CHORUS...I DID FIND A SHELL AND 2 WINGS AND ONE EVENING WHEN I CAME INDOORS THERE WAS A CREATURE CLINGING TO MY SLACKS...IT LOOKS TO BE A BLADDER CICADA, SO ARE THESE THE ONES MAKING ALL THE NOISE? THEY ONLY SEEM TO BE AT GROUND LEVEL..NOT IN TREES LIKE COMMON CICADAS AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD THEM BEFORE ALTHOUGH I HAVE LIVED HERE NEARLY 50 YEARS.

Note that the name "Xmas clanger" is just our field name for the insect, not even a published common name, as the species is not described yet.

A good one to mention/illustrate on lists such as this is the "Floury Baker", Aleeta curvicosta (formerly Abricta curvicosta). It is very common in well-populated eastern areas like Sydney, and it sings often during the day. Also has one of the better Aussie cicada common names.

Hello David -
There are different species out in California. many of the Okanagana genus. The Northern Dusk Singing Cicada is found in the eastern half of the USA. Each species has it sown particular host tree or trees. Most Cicada host species preferences are poorly understood at this time.

I don't know how this came about, but everywhere else in South Africa, Christmas beetles are Christmas beetles, i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_beetle

A cicada isn't even a beetle, so I have can only assume someone misnamed a cicada and it stuck. Thankfully, the rest of us South Africans know what a beetle is.

Thank you for your taking up and readers’ comments.
Quoted article is subsequent to other article.
Now I wrote the summary and complements of four series of story which includes this one with answer for commenter in my mind.
As the SPEC of my blog doesn’t accommodate English version, linefeed is not correct, rather confusing. Please read patiently.

Wow. Wow. Wow. The blue moon has mythological status where I come from. In fact, I didn't think the blue mutation was a possibility until now. This is fantastic!
