I don’t know how this came about, but everywhere else in South Africa, Christmas beetles are Christmas beetles, i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_beetle
A cicada isn’t even a beetle, so I have can only assume someone misnamed a cicada and it stuck. Thankfully, the rest of us South Africans know what a beetle is.
