I’ve been noticing the trees in the garden look quite a bit like the photo titled “Flagging”. Is this damage done from the cicadas? Will it harm the trees?

Hello Marsha,
Flagging comes from the cicadas laying eggs inside the small terminal branches of trees. Sometimes, the smaller branches die and break off. This is known as flagging.
For most healthy trees, it serves as a gentle pruning. Some very young trees or delicate ornamentals can be damaged by the egg laying, however.
