More Ozzie Cicada photos have come in. Here is an incredible Blue Moon taken by David Emery (found by his daughter). The Blue Moon is the same species as the Green Grocer (Cyclochila australasiae).

Hello, I was looking for the emergence/observation report form that I recall from past years, but I guess it’s not been opened since this is supposed to be an “off year”.
However, I am hearing cicada songs and answering chorus in Athens, Ohio during the 8-9 p.m. EDT hour. We were anticipating a large storm tonight, but it has died out, just short of our county.
As a result, the 80+ F temps have continued into the evening (though elsewhere in Ohio they have dipped to 70s).
Daytime heat index have been over 100 all this week, but yesterday, only reached 94 F plus humidity and today was supposed to be better.
Are these not ideal cicada hatching conditions, given the heat wave? Only occassional showers have arrived this week,
Not seeing anything on the Brood 2011 maps for our state or SE Ohio. Any suggestions about what’s up?
could it be another brood cross-multiplying or drifting from their original hatch cycle?
Any info would be appreciated. I expect to profile Cicadamania on my TV show tomorrow night.
We look for interesing, zany websites to feature live in a 90 second segment called “Surfin’ with Kirk”.

Off topic, Kirk, but what the heck. Depends on the species. If they’re calling, they’re happy. 100 F would send Magicicada into a state of torpor. Tibicen, maybe not.

Wow. Wow. Wow. The blue moon has mythological status where I come from. In fact, I didn’t think the blue mutation was a possibility until now. This is fantastic!

fOR THE LAST FEW YEARS AN ARMY OF ? HAS BEEN USING MY AND MY NEIGHBOURS GARDEN AS AN OPERA HOUSE..I CAN’T FIND THEM BECASUE THEY GO QUIET WHEN I APPROACH BUT FROM EARLY EVENING UNTIL AFTER DARK IN WARMER MONTHS THEY START UP WITH THE MOST INCREDIBLE CHORUS…I DID FIND A SHELL AND 2 WINGS AND ONE EVENING WHEN I CAME INDOORS THERE WAS A CREATURE CLINGING TO MY SLACKS…IT LOOKS TO BE A BLADDER CICADA, SO ARE THESE THE ONES MAKING ALL THE NOISE? THEY ONLY SEEM TO BE AT GROUND LEVEL..NOT IN TREES LIKE COMMON CICADAS AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD THEM BEFORE ALTHOUGH I HAVE LIVED HERE NEARLY 50 YEARS.
