Gene Kritsky was nice enough to send a paper he wrote with a formula for predicting the emergence date. E = (19.465 2 t)/0.5136, where E = emergence start date in May and t = average April temperatures in °Celsius. His formula worked like a charm for predicting the Brood X emergence in Cincinnati. 80% of his sites had begun the emergence on the predicted date of May 14th of that year. Also when the ground temperature reaches a consistent 64° Farenheit that is another good sign the mergence is about to begin.

I'm visiting my family in Northern Illinois in Early June - so I'm hoping the Cicadas are numerous and loud. We got them in Maryland a couple of years ago and I had a delightful time photographing and videotaping them. Thanks to this website I was even mentioned in the Washington Post!

Like the new look of your site, BTW.

I'd say that late May will be the start and it runs through June. I only recognize this since I lilved in Chicago my entire life and do remember when they last came out when I was 13 years old. I was still in grammar school and we had a field trip to Brookfield Zoo, which would've been late May at best.
