About this Bibliography of the Cicadoidea

Compiled by Timothy McNary. Last Update: December 1, 2006.

The following bibliography of the Cicadoidea, compiles references from 3 sources. First and foremost is the “A Bibliography of the Cicadoidea (Homoptera: Auchenorhyncha)” by Z. P. Metcalf (1962). This reference listed over 2669 works on cicadas up through 1955. The second major source is the bibliography in Catalogue of the Cicadoidea (Homoptera, Auchenorhyncha) 1956-1850. by J. P. Duffels and P. A. Van der Lann (1985). This book includes 677 references, mostly between 1956 and 1980, but does include some works prior to 1956. An additional 1375 plus references are now included, covering references not cited in Metcalf’s or Duffels and Van der Lann’s works. This update list 370 new references included since June 2006 . The new listings are mostly from 1980 through 2006.

  1. Tim, this is a great effort and an extremely useful database and Christmas present to cicadaphiles everywhere. You have upstaged the Moulds, Duffels and Sanborn trio who are also working to verify early records!! Merry Christmas.

  2. David, Thanks for the compliment on the Bibliography. It is never complete and has lots of errors and typos. I do not look at
this as upstaging Moulds, Duffels and Sanborn. I started to help me organize references, before I knew of their efforts, and
lately have been supplying a number of papers to Max Moulds in an effort to help their efforts. It is important that they
    finish their works

I expect that their finished product will be much better, more informative, more complete and more useful to researchers, than this working
database. It is also my understanding that they will be publishing their works on paper, in a book. That is vastly better
and more durable than a working effort on the web. They are aware of my database, and I hope they do not see this as upstaging
    their works.
