David from Sydney let us know: "The cicada season around Sydney, Australia has started with the emergence of "green grocers" (Cyclochila australasiae) in the lower Blue Mountains. 5/25/2003 - The most frequently asked question: will the cicadas kill my trees. short answer: no. Cicadas have been around for millions of years -- if they killed trees, there wouldn't be any trees left to kill. ;-)

July 10, 2002 - a lot of people have been asking about Cicada Killer Wasps, a breed of wasp that preys on cicadas. A word of advice: although they are a non aggressive species, they will sting you if they feel they're in danger, so be cautious.

October 15th, 2001 -- Cicada researcher John Cooley finally added, "information about the exciting discovery of a female signal in Magicicada. Dave [Marshall] and I discovered this in 1995, but it's taken until now to get it published." You'll find more information on the three web sites they contribute to:

August 21th, 2001 -- Our cicada mailing list is no more. Microsoft killed
their Listbot service. I'll set up a new list service in time for next spring.
On a brighter note I finally picked up Gene Kritsky's In
Ohio's Backyard --Periodical Cicadas book and it's truly awesome. It's a must
have for any Ohio based cicada maniac. I live in Jersey (pity poor me) and I still
love it. It's a great resource for anyone curious about Magicicada.

May 17th, 2000 -- "The acceleration of X in Cincinnati has taken off in the past two days. Tens of thousands have now been reported. I have 400+ locations in 6 counties. All three species have been collected and I have now reports of mating. I am trying to update people on what is happening here at www.msj.edu/cicada" -- Gene Kritsky, College of Mount St. Joseph
May 16th, 2000 -- more reports of Brood X coming in, including at least one from Virginia. If you live in the Ohio, Maryland, or Virginia area and are experiencing a Brood X emergence please contact Gene Kritsky at CDarwin@aol.com. Gene is documenting the unusual 13 year emergence of this 17 year brood.
May 15th, 2000 -- The big news is Magicicada Brood X is emerging 4 years earlier than expected in a few places, so far Ohio and Maryland. See the Cicada Mail page for sightings.
